British Values

At The Garden, we respect and value the diversity of all our pupils, families, and the wider school community. We understand it is our responsibility to actively promote the fundamental British values of Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, and Mutual Respect and Tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. The ethos of our school, along with targeted strategies for embedding these values at various stages of our pupils' lives, prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they will encounter as British citizens.

We adhere to guidance from the DfE on the promotion of "British values" as an integral part of the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of our pupils.

SMSC development is integrated into the curriculum for all our pupils. Students participate in activities that enhance social skills through group work and role-playing, fostering teamwork and empathy. They learn to respect diversity through discussions about different cultures. Exposure to art encourages creative expression, while lessons on right and wrong help them navigate ethical situations. Communication skills are developed as they express their preferences in school and during community visits. Participation in sports promotes teamwork and resilience, while cultural activities create a sense of belonging. This approach supports students' social and emotional growth, preparing them to be responsible and respectful citizens.

What

Spiritual Development is a key aspect of personal growth that helps students reflect on their own beliefs, values, and purpose, while fostering an appreciation for the beliefs and values of others. It involves nurturing a sense of wonder, imagination, and connection to the world and other people. Here’s how spiritual development can be fostered in an educational context like The Garden School.

Moral Development is an essential component of education that focuses on helping students understand the difference between right and wrong, develop respect for others, and cultivate a sense of responsibility for their actions. It equips students with the ability to reflect on moral and ethical dilemmas, understand the consequences of their actions, and make reasoned judgments

Social Development is a key aspect of personal growth in education, focusing on students' ability to interact effectively with others, form positive relationships, and contribute to their communities. It equips students with the necessary social skills to navigate different environments, work collaboratively, and engage as active citizens.

Cultural Development is an essential part of a student's education, focusing on broadening their understanding of different cultures, traditions, and values. It helps students appreciate diversity, understand their place in the world, and develop a respectful attitude towards others, fostering a more inclusive and empathetic society.
