Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
At The Garden School, we are committed to providing our pupils with the highest standard of education, creating an environment where children and young people can thrive, learn, and reach their full potential.
Our flexible, personalised programs offer a wide range of positive experiences, helping students develop independence, communication skills, positive relationships, and the confidence to believe in themselves and make positive life choices. We believe every student has both the ability and the right to learn and achieve.
To ensure the success of our curriculum, we encourage students to be ready to learn, respectful, and safe at all times. We strive to maintain a school environment that is safe, supportive, and free from intimidation. By actively promoting a culture of awareness, tolerance, and inclusion, we make clear that all forms of bullying are unacceptable, fostering a positive atmosphere where everyone is respected and valued. In order to do this we adopt Positive Behaviour Support approach.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), is an evidence-based approach designed to improve the quality of life for individuals by understanding and addressing behaviours that challenge. It focuses on the interaction between a person and their environment, recognising that behaviours is not random but a response to unmet needs such as sensory processing difficulties, poor health, isolation, trauma, or lack of control. PBS seeks to identify the reasons behind challenging behaviours and addresses them by modifying the environment, teaching new skills, and promoting more effective ways to meet an individual's needs. This approach emphasises proactive strategies that prioritise positive reinforcement. The ultimate aim of PBS is to foster inclusion, enhance personal well-being, and minimise behaviours that negatively affect the individual’s or others' quality of life, while ensuring a supportive and empowering environment. By understanding what drives certain behaviours, PBS helps educators and caregivers implement strategies that provide individuals with better access to what they need, ultimately promoting more positive interactions and a greater sense of control.
